John formed OVERLORDE with Mark in 1985. Using his trademark  Steinberger bass with a powerful and aggressive style, he and Mark established from day one that the Overlorde sound would be different from anything else. He also handled the Lead Vocal duties until Pat O'Donnell joined in early 1986.

John had to step away from the band in January 2018 but returned in July 2019.​
